Twister

My mom accidentally bought tickets for this instead of Glen Powell’s Twisters. It was an okay film.

10.0 - TLDR this is one of my all time favorite movies for a lot of personal reasons & one of the movies I’ve seen more than any other. It’s honestly a pretty good probably high 7s objectively, but I can’t separate my love for it.

Here’s a little different, a little more personal, & a much longer review. ⬇️

This is probably one of the top five movies that I’ve seen the most times. And it’s one of my all time favorites. I grew up right in the middle of tornado alley. My dad was very close to being a meteorologist, & took my brothers and I “storm chasing” to watch major thunderstorms roll in to our area frequently. We went outside to look at the sky when tornado sirens went off, & we spent countless nights just sitting on the front porch & watching storms for hours. The Weather Channel was the most likely thing on TV in our house outside maybe ESPN. And I watched this movie with him dozens of times. If I couldn’t be Dr. Alan Grant I wanted to be Bill Harding. One of my first crushes was Dr. Jo Harding. I wanted to name my future dog either Toby or Mose. My dad would tell me to “roll the maps”whenever I was in charge of navigating pre-GPS & I said “Tasty cow, Aunt Meg” almost any time I had steak for a decade.

But I haven’t been able to watch it in years. My dad passed away in 2017, about a month before Bill Paxton oddly enough, & something about watching a movie that I linked so closely to him that opens with a scene of one of the main characters’ dad dying was just too hard.

But today would be my dad’s 56th birthday, & Twisters releases tonight, & it feels too poetic. So I finally watched it again, before my brother, wife & I go see Twisters.

And I am so happy I did. It brought back so many good memories. It’s still fun as fuck. Tons of great quotes. That true blockbuster feel even from the small screen - not a shock when Steven Spielberg & Michael Crichton are behind the production and writing. Sure there are some wacky effects, but for 1996, they don’t feel that bad. There’s also a need to suspend a lot of belief because there’s a ton of Hollywood silliness. But if you do, it’s a blast. The supporting cast is loaded in a way I never realized until today, & both Paxton and Helen Hunt give absolute *movie star* performances. And the tension in the final act rivals 98% of thriller/horrors I’ve seen.

It may be a 3.5-4 star movie at its core but it’s easily a 5 star to me. Glen Powell, you got some big shoes to fill, my guy - no pressure.

I don’t get the hate from this movie. The CGI back then was amazing and got awards I understand it looks fake but it’s funny to see.
Overall a great story. I’ve seen bits in the past but not all the way through and it’s been on my watchlist too for ages.
Solid 7/10
