Insidious: The Red Door

entertaining & had some good scares but the ending felt so rushed and anticlimactic, def an unsatisfying end to the series. however i loved seeing the lipstick demon’s lair and how art was incorporated into the movie

Insidious: The Red Door

Worst of the series easily. Uninspired and filled with poor performances. Not really connected to the first two movies in a meaningful way.

It’s good, it shows the importance of memories even when they’re bad we need to keep them, I like that Dalton finds himself with art

Insidious: The Red Door

Warning : I have a lot to yap about. ⚠️ ‼️

Upon rewatch, I’ll admit, I may have judged this movie a little too harshly. That said, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, this still doesn’t come close to matching the quality or terror of the earlier Insidious films. But it’s not the worst thing to ever grace my screen either.

The film’s biggest misstep is its attempt to prioritize emotional depth over genuine horror. The Red Door tries to pivot the franchise into a story about father-son relationships, trauma, and fractured family dynamics. While I understand the need to address the aftermath left by previous entries—especially if the story is set years later—it feels like the horror was demoted to a secondary element. The emotional weight becomes the story itself, with the horror acting as a device to push that narrative along, instead of the other way around. That’s a problem when the franchise is beloved for its unsettling atmosphere, otherworldly tension, and truly terrifying moments.

One of the reasons Insidious as a series stands out is because of its intricately connected timeline—spanning across decades, generations, and dimensions, yet remaining coherent and impactful. It has always delivered a deep, intriguing backstory wrapped in creative scares and psychological unease. The Red Door loses that thread. The plot is choppy and often confusing, the scares feel predictable and uninspired, and much of the film plays like a generic horror movie that just so happens to feature familiar characters. Honestly, if I didn’t already know and care about this family, I don’t think I’d be invested at all.

And let’s talk about the lore—what happened?! Suddenly, spirits can appear in the real world, paintings are portals, and demons can attack people who haven’t even astral-projected? So we’re just tossing out years of carefully established rules now? The structure of The Further—how it works, who can access it, and how the spirits and demons behave—was one of the most compelling and consistent parts of this franchise. Stripping that away for convenience undercuts everything that made these films special and unique. At this point, it feels like they threw the rulebook out the window.

I’ll say this: if this wasn’t an Insidious movie—if it stood alone as a random supernatural horror—it might have worked better. I probably wouldn’t be this critical. But Insidious is my favorite horror franchise of all time, and this entry just didn’t hold up to the legacy. It didn’t build on the foundation in any meaningful way, nor did it deliver the level of fear or creativity fans have come to expect.

(Also, small personal note, I watched this as my birthday activity, and honestly, it kind of ruined my day.)
