Bugsy Malone

When I was browsing Barnes and Noble and came across this film, I honestly thought I had seen it before. The title sounded familiar, and the cover had that old-school vibe that made me think it was just one of those movies I caught on TV years ago. But once I started watching it, I realized—nope, this was a first-time watch. And wow, it was way weirder than I expected.

It’s hands down one of the strangest gangster movies I’ve ever seen. All the usual adult stuff—violence, swearing, the whole gritty, hard-edged vibe—is technically gone. But what’s wild is that the movie still somehow feels like a legit gangster flick. It’s got the look, the attitude, and the rhythm of the genre, just acted out entirely by kids. It’s like watching a classic mob story play out in an alternate universe where the world is run by 12-year-olds, and yet… it works.

I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. There’s a charm to it, and it never comes off as cheesy or like it’s playing it too safe. And Jodie Foster—come on. She’s easily the highlight. Even at such a young age, she had this presence that pulls you in. You can tell she was going to be a star.

Honestly, I’m glad I picked this one up. It’s different, but in a really memorable way. Definitely worth a watch if you’re into offbeat takes on familiar genres.
